Since 2011, the NHFD has been offering membership to those individuals 16 and 17 years old who reside in the Town of New Hartford. This is known as “restricted membership” and allows young men and women alike to get a taste of the volunteer fire service. While they cannot serve as interior firefighters, and their scope of abilities is limited, they are able to get a head start on state fire and EMS training so that they may become full members when they turn 18. The program has been very successful, and almost all of the participants have gone on to become full members, some even officers of the department.
