April 21, 1943 – January 22, 2023
Dr. John DeTraglia was appointed Company Physician in September 1981 and served for over 41 years. Dr. DeTraglia served faithfully and proudly. Always a supportive proponent of our Emergency Medical Service (EMS) program, “Dr. D” was an integral part in achieving our Advanced Life Support (ALS) status and the ability to carry narcotics for cardiac cases and other ALS prescription drugs for life threatening medical emergencies. As Medical Director for the department, he worked continually to assure the department was always at the forefront of EMS in the region. A member of a strong community oriented family, Dr. DeTraglia’s brother, Gustave Jr., has been the Village of New Hartford Attorney for over forty years as well. On August 20, 1966, Dr. DeTraglia married the former Cynthia Derrico in St. Agnes Church in Utica. Their blessed union of over 56 years produced two wonderful children; a son Scott and his wife Sarah; a daughter Julie and her husband Brian Duffy. They would later be blessed with four adoring grandchildren. Dr. DeTraglia was the consummate physician and surgeon. He played a key role in establishing the Trauma Center at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and he served as its Medical Director. He truly loved sharing his passion for medicine with others and served on many area boards and served as Medical Director for Mid-State EMS and the Boilermaker Road Race among others.
